How to Nail Minimalist Style in Spring 2020
Less Takes More
The minimalist style archetype seemingly goes hand in hand with capsule wardrobes. A capsule wardrobe is built on neutral basics - that's minimalist, right? Not quite. A capsule wardrobe a minimalist approach to personal style and closet organization. Most of my client's capsules are intentionally curated with color, print and textural accents so they don't get bored with a wardrobe foundation of neutral staples. I have very few clients that maintain a capsule wardrobe with a minimalist aesthetic.

The Minimalist Style Archetype is characterized by a few key aesthetic elements:
Muted palette
Negative space
Embellishment restraint
Impeccable (albeit unexpected) tailoring and fit
Interesting textures and proportions
The Minimalist style archetype is traditionally favored by modernists and people who work in highly aesthetic fields, like architecture, fine art or fashion design. When you are invested in multi-media creative execution it’s a natural response to simplify your individual aesthetic as not to compete with the product.
Over the past few years (and with much influence from the Yeezy brand) the minimalist style archetype has crept deeply into popular culture. So, if you are having a minimalist moment and don't know why, blame it on the Kardashians and follow these 5 easy steps to Nail Minimalist Style in Spring 2020.

Step 1: Store Your Skinnies
In Spring 2020 the essential minimalist pant is not skinny. This isn't a order for you to throw away your beloved skinny jeans. Skinny jeans are classic minimalist. It's fine. However, the modern approach to minimalist tailoring in Spring 2020 favors an expanded silhouette. Think: balloon pant, peg legged, high waisted, cropped, wide or straight legs.

Step 2: Embrace the Crop
Stop playing and give proper credit to Kim Kardashian for cementing the adult crop top. I love her for it. I cannot get enough of this look. To "embrace the crop" doesn't require exposed upper obliques or any exposed midriff skin. This is actually a study in negative space. A cropped ankle is just as modern - no one can fault a bit of ankle cleavage. Play with bodysuits, layer a cropped sweater over a slim fit tank top or even a slim dress. Crop the hem to showcase a sleek flat sandal.

Step 3: Go Green
Army green is having a major Spring 2020 fashion moment. I've always loved the utilitarian, don't tread on me vibe of this military staple. I am laser focused on an army green Celine micro tote but there is no reason to drop $2K to nail this trending neutral. Go to a military supply (or Amazon) and snap up an crossbody utility medic bag. Minimalist, on trend and 100% authentically cool.

Step 4: Impact Accessory
Minimalist doesn’t mean no accessories, in fact an impact accessory is the perfect anchor for a minimalist outfit. The key to keeping the entire vibe of your outfit minimalist is to look for ONE bold accessory that utilizes ONE exaggerated element. Think: Chunky silver chain necklace, a dramatic waist belt or an architecturally shaped handbag. If you need some minimalist outfit inspiration, search Pinterest for Diane Keaton style. She is killing the minimalist look daily, always with an impact accessory and so much personality.

Step 5: Athleisure Element
The most notable evolution in mainstream Minimalist Style in Spring 2020 is the injection of an athleisure element. This tweak on classic minimalist is 100% influenced by Kanye Wests’ Yeezy clothing line and the Minimalist Athleisure look has trickled down to streets of every country in the world. A quick search for “Street Style (insert city)” reveals oversized sweatpants, cropped hoody sweatshirts, and chunky sneakers all executed in a minimal palette. You don’t have to go completely exaggerated with athleisure references to nail Minimalist Style in Spring 2020, an intentional swap of sleek white sneakers for your typical ballet flats will blend your Classically Chic style outfit with Minimalist Athleisure gracefully.
