Also known as "festival style" or "boho chic," the Free Spirit style aesthetic goes hand in hand with summer fashion. Think: maxi skirts, peasant tops, lace-up sandals, a kimono, and distressed denim shorts over your favorite well-worn bikini. Top the look off with delicate jewelry, a straw bag, and a global, beach nomad vibe - voila! Free Spirit.

Over the past decade, the Free Spirit style aesthetic has become synonymous with music festival season. Spring 2020 is the first in at least five years that I have not spent hours pouring through celebrity/influencer Instagram feeds to trend spot how Free Spirit style was interpreted at the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Coachella has become THE annual breeding ground for boho fashion.

Free Spirit Style Archetype 101
There shouldn't be anything "precious" about your summertime Free Spirit capsule wardrobe staples. These clothes are meant to go from sand to surf and dry in the sun with salt in the fabric, like the perfect beach wave hairstyle.
The Free Spirit Style Archetype is characterized by a few key aesthetic elements:
Flowing, breathable garments like tunics, peasant skirts or kimonos
Beach or desert-inspired jewelry like coral and turquoise
Hand-made fabrication embellishments like beading, eyelet, embroidery, and fringe

As I begin planning what I am calling an "essentials only" summer 2020 capsule wardrobe, Free Spirit style will play heavily in my look. A great capsule wardrobe accurately reflects your lifestyle, and my summer lifestyle will involve lots of yard time with kids.
